A year after graduating from Sheldon High School, he was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Betty Williams on July 24, 1967 in Archer, Iowa. After their marriage the couple lived in Copperas Cove, Texas while Rod served on the Killeen Nuclear Base. After his discharge from the service they returned to Sheldon area where Rod started raising livestock and eventually turned into grain farming. Rod passed away on Friday, September 18, 2009 at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon as a result of a farming accident, reaching the age of 62 years, 1 month and 26 days.

He was a member of the Sheldon United Methodist Church and the McGlothlen-Cowie Post #145 of the American Legion of Sheldon. He enjoyed woodcarving and traveling doing mission work to locations as: Texas, Mexico, Spain and Belgium. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Rod leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Betty of Sheldon; two daughters and their spouses, Raeanne and Klinton Tatsumi of Sheldon and Laurel and Thomas Foster of Waterloo, Iowa; three grandchildren, Nathan and Victoria Tatsumi and Emma Kyes; two brothers and a sister and their spouses, Dennis and Ladonna Van Meeteren of Sheldon; Donna and Edgar Schaeffer of Yankton, South Dakota; and Larry and Connie Van Meeteren of Sheldon; and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
