“Bob” the fifth of eight children was born to Jacob Vincent and Dorothy Ellen (Kruel) Schott on January 17, 1927 in Pocahontas, Iowa. He passed away on Friday, April 20, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was baptized at the Catholic Church January 27, 1927 in Pocahontas. When he was two years old the family moved to a farm northwest of Bradgate, Iowa, where they lived until Bob was 10 years old when his father passed away as a result of a farm accident. The family moved to Rolfe, Iowa. He served in W.W. II from 1944 to 1946 as a Seabee in the Navy serving in the Philippines as a baker. Bob returned to Rolfe and finished high school graduating from high school in 1947. He actively participated in sports both before and after his service to our country. On June 6, 1953, he and Velda Jones were married at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua, Iowa. To this union four children were born. Bob was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Rolfe, Iowa on May 8, 1933. His career in the lumber yard business began in Rolfe and continued in Lohrville, Iowa with Fullerton Lumber Company. The family moved Orange City, Iowa in 1961, when he worked for Van Eizenga Lumber Yard and eventually the Farmers Co-op. He served as manager in each of the four companies. Bob’s life of service to others included his devoted service to his family as they grew up encouraging them in their school and church activities. He seldom missed a football or basketball game, a track meet or music event for his children.
Bob was a member of the fire departments in Rolfe, Lohrville and Orange City; he was a lifetime member of the VFW Post in Rolfe, Lohrville and was the past Commander in Granville. He served as an EMT in Orange City for 17 years and a scout master for 8 years, other services in his life included being active in church. Bob and Velda are charter members of Faith Lutheran Church in Orange City where he also was building chairman and Youth and Education Director. His hobbies included woodworking for home, church and friends. Fishing, camping and travel especially with his children, grandchildren were of great importance to him.
Survivors include his wife, Velda of Granville; two sons, Kirk (Melissa) of Bruce Crossing, Michigan; Kevin (Teresa) of Grand Junction, Colorado; two daughters, Karen (Steve) Vermeer of Boyden and Kandy (Jeff) Prochaska of Burlington, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Michael, Neelly and Hilliary Schott, Michelle Vermeer and Tiffany (Mike) Van Roekel and Luke Prochaska; one great granddaughter, Kyli Vermeer; also other relatives and friends
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Schott; his parents, five brothers, Richard, Raymond, Kenneth, DeWayne and Thomas; and two sisters, Bernice Miller and Ruth Scott.
