Muriel Frances Stapenhorst, the daughter of Theodore Vincent and Marie (Kersbergen) Rogers, was born December 18, 1916 in Sheldon, Iowa. She attended a rural country school near Doon, Iowa until the 8th grade, she then graduated from Mount St. Mary’s High School in Cherokee, Iowa and received her teaching certificate from the Sheldon Junior College in 1934. Muriel was united in marriage to Carl J. Stapenhorst on September 17, 1935 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alvord, Iowa. The couple made their home in Sheldon, where they both worked at Starrets Department Store, until the store was destroyed by fire on March 19, 1958. They then opened Carl’s Foot Wear on August 13, 1958; they sold the store to Hank Bousema in 1975, when they retired. Her husband preceded her in death on December 1, 1984. Muriel remained in her home in Sheldon until moving to Rochester, Minnesota to be near her daughter in May 2007. She passed away on Monday, December 31, 2007 at the Madonna Meadows in Rochester, Minnesota, reaching the age of 91 years and 13 days.
Muriel was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon; where she was a member of the Ladies Guild and Catholic Daughters of America; she was also member of Daughters of the American Revolution. Her hobbies and interest were her family and friends and bible study.
Muriel is survived by her daughter, Martha and her husband, John Roemer of Rochester, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Ann Roemer and Thomas Roemer; four great-grandchildren, Bailey Carlson; Elysia, Keenan and Luke Roemer; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Stapenhorst; and her parents.
