MARVIN UITTENBOGAARD
Marvin Uittenbogaard, the son of Dick and Maude (Kross) Uittenbogaard, was born on October 22, 1931, in Sanborn, Iowa. He graduated from Sheldon High School. Marv served in the United Sates Marine Corps from January of 1951 during the Korean War and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in January of 1954. On July 11, 1952 Marv was united in marriage to Dorothy Wynja, at Bethel Reformed Church, in Sheldon. After their marriage, Marv began many ventures in his professional career. He was a part owner of Sheldon Lumber and Construction, operated a feed grinding business, and then started Uittenbogaard Construction Inc. in 1965. Marv was a pioneer in the construction of poultry units, hog confinements and cattle confinements in the agricultural industry.
While being a local business owner, Marv was an active part of the Sheldon community. He served as the Mayor of Sheldon for seven years, was Sheldon Chamber of Commerce President and received Sheldon Man of the Year Hank Award. Marv served on many committees including Sheldon Community Development, Charter Member of Behlen Building Advisory Team, Christian Retirement Board, and Childrens World Building Project. He was a leader and promoter of local events such as Sheldon Soybean Days and Celebration Days. He was also an initial Village Partner of Village Northwest Unlimited.
Marv was an active member of Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon. He served as Elder and Deacon and also taught catechism and Sunday school. He enjoyed taking the family out to Bethels Sunday night hymn sings. Marv enjoyed many activities with his wife, children and grandchildren such as vacationing across the United States and Europe, sledding, snow tubing, snowmobiling, waterskiing, gardening, working in his yard, and being together as a family on holidays. Marv and Dorothy spent many years wintering in Florida and numerous trips to Walt Disney World. Marv worked hard, but played hard.
Left to cherish Marvs memory is his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Uittenbogaard of Sheldon; four children and their spouses, Jerry and Cammy Uittenbogaard of Sheldon, Judy and Lee Schemper of Sheldon, Sherri and Kevin Bornhoft of Humboldt, Iowa, and Paula and Greg Sawyer of Sheldon; seven grandchildren, Kyle (Melissa) Uittenbogaard, Jeff (Tiffany) Uittenbogaard, Lindsay (Nick) Stanton, Alissa Bornhoft, Zach (Jen) Sawyer, Jeff (Jill) Schemper, Jodi (Glen) Lutjens; eleven great grandchildren, Brittany, Courtney, Tyler, Colton Uittenbogaard, Chloe Sawyer, Treyton, Chandler, Jarace, Aidyn Schemper, Jordan and Kobe Lutjens, sister-in-law, Ardie Uittenbogaard, also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Marv was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John (Bess), Ed (Agnes), Art (Fritz), Dick, and Martin (Sylvia)(Greta) Uittenbogaard, sister, Mina DeVries and a sister in infancy, Whilhamena Uittenbogaard.
