MARVIN C. HARTONG

Marvin Charles Hartong, the son of David and Signa (Petersen) Hartong was born March 3, 1923 at Arthur, Iowa. He moved with his family at the age of three to a farm near Gaza, Iowa. He received his education in Gaza and graduated from Gaza High School in 1941. He furthered his education at a trade school in Minneapolis in 1942 after which he returned to the family farm. On June 25, 1944, he was united in marriage to Hazel Harris in Bradgate, Iowa. Their married life was spent on the family farm near Gaza. He also was employed at Lundell Manufacturing in Cherokee for several years and for 40 years was a representative for Patz Farm Equipment. He had a licensed kennel and raised Siberian Huskies, Golden Retrievers and Cocker Spaniels for many years. His dogs were sent to homes all over the country. He also helped out at the Paullina Golf Course and drove truck for Farmers Co-op in Paullina. The couple retired and made their home in Paullina. He passed away on Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Orange City Health System long term care, reaching the age of 86 years, 11 months and 23 days.
He was a former member of the Methodist Church in Paullina and had served on the church board. He was currently a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina. He had a been a 4-H leader, served on the Soil Conservation Board, was past President of the N.W. Iowa Square Dance Caller Association, and past president of the Gaza Alumni Association. The couple for many years taught ballroom and square dancing throughout northwest Iowa. The sound system they had was used for school activities, fund raisers and he was known for doing the “cake walk” for the A.F.S. carnivals in Paullina.
Marvin is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Hazel of Paullina; four sons, Steve and Marlys Hartong of Paullina; Michael and Judy Hartong of St. Charles, Missouri; Daniel Hartong of Lincoln, Nebraska and Jay Hartong and Mary Pat Kunkle of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Stephani and Scott; Samantha, Megan and Sonny; Daniel Joe and his wife, Misty Lynn; David John and his wife, Jessica, five great-grandchildren, Tyson, Ethan, Preston, Kimberly and Makayla. He is also survived by one sister, Lois Tjossem and her husband, Bud Johnson of Primghar; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Lanning and a brother-in-law, Leroy Dahlberg; also nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Viola and Gladys in infancy.
