MARVIN D. HALSTROM

Marvin Dale Halstrom passed away on October 15, 2013 peacefully at the Baum-Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar, Iowa at the age of 86 years 9 months and 8 days. Marv was born January 7, 1927 at the family farm in northern Cherokee County to Leonard and Edith (Anderson) Halstrom. He graduated from Meriden High School in 1944 and lived his entire life on the same farm. In June 1951, Marvin married Sharon Myrick and they were blessed with two children, John Marvin and Janice Lynn. Marvin was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Paullina Lions Club. He enjoyed so much the coffee group at Dyno’s and missed it terribly when his health was failing this year.
Marv was affectionately known as “Harry” because of his grandchildren, Nikki and Tony who named family members after Sesame Street characters. The character “Harry Monster” became “Harry” for short and it stuck through two generations for grandkids and friends. One of his greatest joys was visiting with people about cattle or farming or whatever, and outings with his brother, Jim. Most of all he enjoyed being with his family and watching the grandkids and their families grow up.
Marvin leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Janice and her husband, Trace Tjossem of Primghar; two grandchildren, Nicole and her husband, Carl Zylstra of Hull and Anthony Tjossem of Paullina; five great grandchildren, Brooke, Bryan and Brent Zylstra and Bailey and Cole Tjossem. Three sisters, Arlene Carlson of Peoria, Arizona; Phyllis Smith of Sheldon and Bernice Steele of Spirit Lake; a brother, Jim Halstrom of Meriden; a brother-in-law, Bob Mortenson of Blair, Nebraska and a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Naomi Myrick of Weems Virginia; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon on November 3, 1983; a son, John in 1975; his parents, one brother, Milton Halstrom and two sisters, Ruby Pixler and Lorraine Mortenson.
