MARTHA M. WINTER
Martha Margaretha Winter, daughter of William H. and Dorathea (Bahlke) Winter, was born May 10, 1925, in Lyon County, Iowa. Baptized May 17, 1925, and confirmed April 2, 1939, she lived most of her life in Sioux County. There she attended St. John Christian Day School near Boyden, Iowa. Martha was a dedicated homemaker and farmer, caring for the bachelors of her family and running a successful chicken operation. As the family caregiver, Martha nurtured her brother, Arnold, for many years. Martha passed away peacefully at Sanford Senior Care on Friday, November 4, 2011, reaching the age of 86 years, 5 months and 25 days.
A member of St. John Lutheran Church of Boyden, she was active in the Dorcas Society and taught Sunday School for 20 years. Her life was organized around service as she quilted and gathered kit items for Lutheran World Relief. She loved flowers and embroidery, and her kitchen always smelled of delicious things. With a simple frugal taste, she had a practical, yet creative, touch that could make anything better.
She leaves to cherish her memory her two brothers, Arnold of Sheldon and Ernest and wife Carol of Boyden; nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, Albert, Fritz, and Louis, and 1 sister, Betty McKnight.
