Marian Richter, age 96, formerly of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Ruthven Community Care Center in Ruthven, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 24, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon. Presider is Father Kevin Richter and Concelebrants are the Priests of the Diocese of Sioux City. Burial to follow at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Sheldon. Visitation will be Thursday, May 23, 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present, Parish Rosary at 6:30 P.M. and Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. at Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon. Marian Richter was born on June 26, 1922 near Ashton, Iowa, daughter of Edward and Anna (Spartz) Klosterman. She grew up in rural Ashton and attended St. Mary Catholic School in that community. After graduating from high school, she worked for a few years at J.C. Penney in Sibley, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Elmer Richter of Ashton on April 9, 1947 at St. Mary Catholic Church. They lived in Sibley for 10 years. In 1957, they moved to Sheldon, Iowa, after purchasing the Coast to Coast Hardware Store, which later became a True Value store. They owned and operated it until Elmer passed away on January 24, 1973. Marian was full-time stay at home mother while her children were growing up, and later worked at Sheldon Community School and St. Patrick Catholic School lunch departments and then at Lawson Hardware as a bookkeeper. Marian was a former member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon where she was a member of Catholic Daughters of America. After she moved to Lost Island Lake near Ruthven, Iowa, and later the Ruthven Community Care Center, she attended church in Ruthven or Spencer. When not busy over the years as dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, she enjoyed reading, doing crosswords, playing scrabble and other board games, crocheting and knitting, trailer camping at Lake Okoboji and traveling when she had the chance. Most of all she loved looking out at Lost Island Lake, and chatting and laughing with visitors, particularly her grandchildren. She passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Ruthven Community Care Center. Those left to cherish her memories are her children, Steve (Betty) Richter, Mary (Adrian) Heymer, Gregg (Diane) Richter, Paula (Robert) Lawson, Dan (Candy) Richter, David Richter, Tom Richter, Rev. Kevin Richter, Richard (Lynette) Richter, Robert (Issis) Richter; son-in-law, Jerry Szumski; 25 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Klosterman and Bonnie Klosterman. Preceding her in death in her immediate family were her husband, Elmer Richter; daughter, Kathy Szumski; infant son, Timothy Richter; grandson, Ryan Richter; six brothers; and extended family including several brothers and sisters in law.
