MARIA A. TALSMA

Maria Adele Talsma, the daughter of Gustav and Anna (Lutjens) Sohl was born December 5, 1911 on the family farm near Boyden, Iowa. She received her education in St. John Lutheran School and later attended business school in Fargo, North Dakota. On February 14, 1935, she was united in marriage to Anton Talsma at her parent’s farm home near Matlock, Iowa. After their marriage the couple farmed near Matlock for many years, until moving to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon in December of 1997. Her husband preceded her in death on October 24, 1998 in Sanborn. She remained at the Christian Retirement Home until moving to Logan, Iowa and moved into the Westmont Care center in 2003. She passed away at the care center on Monday, November 19, 2007, reaching the age of 95 years, 11 months and 14 days.
She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in rural Boyden, where her parents had been charter members of the church. She had been active in the Matlock Reformed Church before the church closed. Anton and Marie helped organize the Matlock Senior Citizens Group. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning and was especially known for crocheting her afghans, which all the family have.
Maria is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Anna and Don Rubsam of Carter Lake, Iowa and Faye and LeRoy Lindsey of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one son and his wife, Paul and Joni Talsma of Hazel Green, Wisconsin; also eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; also other relatives and friends
She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant son, her parents, one sister and one brother.

Mother’s Hands

One hand will tell
She was a bride,
That time-worn ring
Entrenched inside,
Those tell-tale lines
From earlier times
Of babies bathed
And bottles fed
And clothing made
With loving thread.

Those hands through years
Have helped to dry
A million tears
And baked a hundred
Birthday cakes,
And wiped up spills
And sealed the lids
On home-canned dills
And fresh made jam;
And then her hands
Baked pyramids
Of muffins (bran).

Loving hands
The ledger there;
The way she cared..

Anna (Talsma) Rubsam .
