LUVELLA CHRISTINE (STEUCK) BURNETT

LuVella Christine (Steuck) Burnett was born on the family farm near Primghar, Iowa to Gustav and Elsie (Zinn) Steuck on September 28, 1921. She was welcomed by an older sister, Sara and an older brother, Elmer. She attended country school followed by two years in Hartley High School. She finished the last two years at Primghar High School graduating with the class of 1939.
LuVella attended Iowa State Teachers College for a short time and then went to work as a legal secretary for Hubert Schultz. Hubert knew that she would like to continue her education so one day asked her to take a letter in shorthand for him. The dictation was for her to contact the University of Iowa in 1947 which led to an undergraduate degree. She also received her Masters Degree from the University of Iowa in 1952. She taught business classes in the High Schools of Bettendorf, Spencer, and Fort Dodge before accepting a position at Pittsburg State College in Pittsburg, Kansas.
Her mode of travel was on Burlington Railroad and on one of her trips she nearly missed the train. The conductor of the train managed to get her on and that is how she met the love of her life, Thomas Burnett of St. Joseph, Missouri, who was the conductor. They were married in Kansas City, Missouri on March 2, 1959. LuVella continued her teaching career at Benton High School from 1961 and retiring in 1983.
During LuVellas and Toms twelve-year marriage they traveled the United States, Mexico, Europe, Australia, and Africa. Their most memorable trip was around the world. Tom passed away on January 29, 1971. After teaching several more years in Benton High School she moved back to Primghar to be near her family.
LuVella was an accomplished seamstress and made many beautiful tailored suits. She loved to walk and enjoyed spending time with friends and family. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Primghar Federated Womens Club, Peace Links and Areme Chapter 461 of the Order of the Eastern Star in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Left to cherish her memories are her niece, Colleen (Lake) Barker and her husband, Bill of Spirit Lake, Iowa; great niece, Lisa (Dale) Acton, Geneva, Illinois; great nephews, Ryan (Nicole) Lake and Jason Lake of Spirit Lake, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Barbara Myers of Arnold, Maryland; niece and nephews, Tiffany (Mike) Woltersdorf and their four children of Hansville, Washington; Mark (Melissa) Myers and their two children of Annapolis, Maryland; and Steve (Robin) Myers and their four children of Yamnill, Oregon; cousins, friends and special neighbors and friends, Brad and Jane McDowell and their children, Brent and Emily.
