LEONARD CLAUS EWOLDT

Leonard Claus Ewoldt, son of Herman Gale Ewoldt and Mary Runge Ewoldt, was born August 1, 1914 and passed away June 30, 2011, at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, IA, attaining the age of 96 years and 11 months. His grandparents, Claus Henry Ewoldt and Anna Emilie (Schultz) Gelster Ewoldt had come to America from Probstei-Holstein Germany in 1879, marrying and settling in Tama County and moving to southwest of Calumet in 1886.
Leonard attended schools in the Larrabee and Calumet area. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Calumet. On February 14, 1939, he was united in marriage to Grace Lillian Mabel Puhrmann of Sutherland at the Bethel Lutheran Church. He farmed in the Calumet area and Hartley area until his retirement and moved to Spencer in 1992. For the next 35 years, Leonard and Grace wintered at a trailer park near Los Fresnos, Texas; that they helped develop and incorporate. Leonard’s passion was music and dancing and his accordion, which he continued playing until he was 88. He had dizzy spells which were not correctly diagnosed until after treatments resulted in short term memory loss. This necessitated nursing home care. He was otherwise healthy and alert until he peacefully went to his heavenly home.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Grace of Sanborn; his daughter-in-law, Joyce Ewoldt of Spencer; his son, James Ewoldt, and his wife, Bridie of Arden Hills, MN.; his daughter, Gale Kruger and her husband, Lyle of Cherokee; his daughter, Connie Huffman and her husband, Judd of Primghar; and his daughter, Patricia Rowray and her husband, Rickie of Cedar Rapids, IA; eighteen grandchildren: Lisa, Lynette, Daniel, Crystal, Brian, Valerie, Sherri, Stephanie, Doyle, Shelly, Daniel, Daran, Regan, Brooke, Paige, Chad, Randy, and Robina; twenty-seven great-grandchildren: Lindsey, Emily, Homia, Thomasia, Stephen, Christopher, Duncan, Eric, Lillianna, Melody, Chelsie, Christopher, Mason, Noah, Carter, Justine, Tobias, Raef, Houston, Bo, Brianne, Dillon, Addison, Benjamin, Nathan, Brooklyn, and Miranda; and three great-great-grandchildren: Ian, Aiden and Emma; also many nieces and nephews.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters: Iona Ewoldt, Lavina Richter, Lois Klimke and Rosali Amendt; two brothers: Alvin Ewoldt and Delmar Ewoldt and two sons: Daniel Ray Ewoldt (infancy) and Dennis Lee Ewoldt (1995).
