LEATRICE M. HONKOMP

Leatrice Honkomp passed away peacefully on June, 22, 2012 at Sunset Cottage in Worthington, MN, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Leatrice Marie (LeClaire) Honkomp, the oldest of four children born to Lester & Louise (Schoo) LeClaire, was born in Currie, Minnesota on July 28, 1926. At the age of 5 the family moved from Minnesota to a farm near Ashton, IA. She attended grade school and graduated from St. Joseph High School in Ashton, IA, in 1944. Immediately after graduation, Leatrice started work as the head bookkeeper for the JC Penney store in Sheldon, IA. She held this position for 53 plus years and was honored at a dinner in Kansas City, Mo, recognizing her 50 years of service – a milestone few had ever reached, particularly women. She considered herself a woman with a career, and saw the change from old fashion local department stores to computerized accounting and large mall located stores. On November 26, 1946, Leatrice married Donald C. Honkomp in Ashton, IA. The union was blessed with two daughters, Karen and Debra. The couple made their life long home in Sheldon, IA, where Don was employed by Walnut Grove Feeds (later W.R. Grace) and then the Iowa Liquor Commission. Don passed away on June 21, 1980.
Leatrice filled her life with many interests. She was an active member of St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, St Patrick’s Catholic Ladies Guild, Business & Professional Women, Garden Club and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed fishing, dancing - from Square Dancing to Ballroom, needlework and sewing (which included making her daughter’s wedding dresses), cards-any cards, reading & stacking magazines.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Karen (Dr. Wayne) Freese of Worthington, MN, Grandchildren: Dan (Amber) Freese - Sioux Falls, SD, Marc (Dawn) Freese - Fulda, MN, Orion (Heidi) Den Beste - Ankeny, IA, John (Stephanie) Den Beste - Lincoln, NE, and Margaret Den Beste - Ames, IA. Great Grandchildren: Abbigail, Kinley, Gracyn Freese; Brittany, Anthony John, Anthony Joseph, Alexis, Nicholas, Ashley Freese; Macy, Morgan DenBeste; Jacob DenBeste; & Ethan Den Beste. Brother, Daryl LeClaire – Denver, CO, Sister, Diane (Bob) Huenerfauth-Windsor, CO, Sisters-in-Law, Carole LeClaire, Spirit Lake, IA, Phyllis & Grace Honkomp, Ashton, IA, and many nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a daughter, Debra Den Beste and a brother, Lane.
Leatrice led a full & active life. She left her family with memories to share. We thank God for the gift of her life.
