LAWRENCE M. PAULSEN

Lawrence M. Paulsen, the son of Max and Marie (Clausen) Paulsen was born August 3, 1922 on the family farm home near Sutherland, Iowa. He received his education in a country school near Granville, Iowa. He worked on the family farm near Granville with his dad until being called into the service during W.W. II on April 15, 1944. He co-piloted B-24’s (heavy bombardment aircraft), flying 38 combat missions over Austria, Italy and Germany. He was shot down on his 38th mission and was a POW for 3 weeks. After his discharge on December 24, 1945, he returned to the family farm. On April 25, 1948, he was united in marriage to Gladys Gebert at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown. After their marriage the couple farmed for many years in the Archer and Granville area until retiring in 1984. The couple moved into Paullina to enjoy their retirement years. Lawrence passed away on Friday, November 20, 2009 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, reaching the age of 87 years, 3 months and 17 days.
Lawrence was baptized in Hartley, later confirmed and was currently a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. He was a member of the Russell West Post of the American Legion, the V.F.W. of Granville and the Ex-POW Great Lakes Chapter of NW Iowa. He enjoyed doing mechanical projects such as building model airplanes and he also enjoyed golfing.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Gladys of Paullina, four sons, Daniel and his wife, Lois Paulsen of Granville; Duane and his wife, Lynne Paulsen of Sioux City; Jim Paulsen of Spencer and Lair Paulsen of New York City; nine grandchildren, Brad and his wife, Karen; Dean and his wife, Angie; Laura; Eric and his wife, Chantel; Michelle; Danielle; Lisa; Nicole and Preston; five great-grandchildren, Kristen; Madison; Karissa; Michael and Daniel; and one brother, Clarence and his wife, Ida Paulsen of Marcus, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Helga Rohrs and Edna Blatt and one brother, Wilken Paulsen.
