Services for LaVern J. Johanson, age 81, of Peterson, Iowa who passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the Sutherland Care Center in Sutherland, Iowa.
Family services will be held at a later date.

LaVern John Johanson, the son of John Gaylord and Gertrude Ellen (Johansen) Johanson, was born December 16, 1933 in St. Paul, Nebraska. The family lived in St. Paul, Nebraska until moving to the Royal, Iowa area in 1944. On October 26, 1951 he enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. During his enlistment he was united in marriage to JoAnn Kepford on March 3, 1953 in Yuma, Arizona. Upon completion of his service on October 14, 1954 the couple moved to the Spencer, and Royal, Iowa area where LaVern was self-employed as a carpenter. The couple moved to Aurora, Colorado in 1984. The couple retired in 1995 and moved to Peterson, Iowa. His wife preceded him in death on October 27, 2010 in Cherokee, Iowa. LaVern remained in Peterson before moving to the Sutherland Care Center on December 4, 2014. He passed away at the Sutherland Care Center on Thursday February 19, 2015 reaching the age of 81 years two months and three days.
He was a member of the Dean Underwood Post # 10 of the American Legion of Peterson, had served as a trustee of the Peterson Heritage, a former member of the volunteer fire departments of both Spencer and Royal and had been a member of the Royal Lions Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
Left to cherish his memory ; three children Missy Johanson of Peterson, Iowa, Mindy and her husband Chuck OBrien of Aurora, Colorado; Troy and his wife Amanda Johanson of Sutherland, Iowa; four grandchildren, Molly and Katie OBrien of Aurora, Colorado and Cody and Melina Johanson of Sutherland, Iowa; a brother and his wife Jimmy and Andrea Johanson of Eden, Georgia and a sister and her husband Marjorie and Keith Mortensen of Royal, Iowa; two brothers-in-law Clair Moding of Everly, Iowa and Rollie Thomas of Spencer, Iowa and a sister-in-law Phyllis Johanson of Branson, Missouri; also other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife JoAnn, parents, one brother Daryl Johanson, three sisters Darlene Englert, Marlene Moding, Jeanine Thomas, and a brother-in-law Bernard Englert.
