JOSEPH A. VERSCHOOR
Joseph Anthony Verschoor, the son of Fred and Antoinette (Robinet) Verschoor was born March 20, 1923 in Hospers, Iowa. Joe passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City, Iowa reaching the age of 93 years, 5 month and 25 days.
He received his education at St. Anthony Catholic Grade School in Hospers and graduated from Hospers High School in 1941. After high school Joe worked for his dad at the Chevrolet Garage in Hospers. On May 26, 1942, he was united in marriage to Marian Elizabeth Reuter at St. Anthonys Catholic Church in Hospers. Joe and Marian made their home in Hospers for many years. Joe joined the U.S. Army on March 18, 1943 and served in the 8th Armor Division during W.W. II in Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. Joe was awarded 3 Bronze Stars during his military service.
After his discharge from the service Joe returned to Hospers where he continued to work for his dad and in 1953 he purchased of the Hospers Chevrolet garage and dealership. Joe also worked for his dad at the Chevrolet garage/dealership in Sheldon and in 1965 he purchased the Sheldon Buick/Chevrolet garage/dealership. Joe and Marian eventually moved to Sheldon, Iowa in 1973 and Joe retired in 1986. In retirement he collected and displayed farm toys at toy shows, enjoyed attending auctions and having garage sales with his wife, Marian and during the winter Joe and Marian visited with their children in AZ and CA.
Joe was a member of the St. Patricks Catholic Church in Sheldon, the Sheldon Knights of Columbus Council #1564 and was member of the Prairie Queen Kiwanis. He was a past member of the Hospers Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Marian of 74 years and their seven children; Donna McCloe of Loveland, Colorado; Brenda and her husband, Bob Campbell of Estero, Florida; Judy and her husband, Patrick Sebrechts of Carlsbad, California; Mary and her husband, Chris Skalsky of Albuerque, New Mexico; Jeanne and her husband, Jim Turner of San Marcos, California; Pam and her husband, Pat Edd of Encinitas, California; Ann Madsen of Sioux City, Iowa. Joe is also survived by six grandchildren; Sandra, Tim, Todd, Scott, Samantha and Christine. Eight great-grandchildren; Steven, Marti, Anthony, Stephanie, Kelly, Robbie, Jordan, Chloe and one great-great-grandchild, Jayden. Joe is also survived by five brothers and sisters; Fred Jr. and his wife, Sue Verschoor of Sedona Arizona; Agnes Smith of Sacramento, California; Rosie Fervanitz of Bedford Oregon; Annette and her husband, Don Hastert of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Charlotte Honkomp of Ankeny, Iowa.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Antoinette and his brother, John.
