HERBERT STUEGELMEIER
Herbert Stuegelmeier, the son of Henry and Margaretha (Hafner) Stuegelmeier was born February 2, 1929 in the Ukraine. He moved with his family after he was born to Siberia. During W.W.II, he was captured by the Germans in June 1941. He was marched through the Eastern European Countries from 1941 to 1942 and spent over a year in Poland. In 1944, he had to leave Poland for Bisdorf, Germany and was forced to join the German Army. He was on his way to the Russian front when he escaped and hid out in Germany until the end of the war. After the war was over he remained in Germany and worked as a chauffeur for German royalty. In 1952, he came to the United States, sponsored by St. John Lutheran Church in May City, Iowa. He worked as a farm hand on the Elmer Brehmer farm and later worked for the Remsen Telephone Company. On February 19, 1956, he was united in marriage to Gloria Meyer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. After their marriage the couple lived in the Paullina area where he worked for Robert Rohwer as a farm hand and later managed hog confinements in the area. The last several years before his retirement, he was the janitor at the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina. He passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the Prairie View Retirement Home in Sanborn, reaching the age of 82 years, 11 months and 22 days.
