GWENDOLYN “GWEN” HEDIN
Gwendolyn Jeanne (Hansen) Hedin, was born February 24, 1926 to William E. (Bill) and Maritta Amanda (Woodman) Hansen in Sheldon, Iowa. Gwen graduated in 1941 from Archer High School and enrolled in the Cadet Nursing Program at Creighton University in Omaha, NE. Her high school sweetheart, Dale Hedin left Iowa State University and enlisted in the Army Air Corp in July of 1943, and while at the movies one spring evening, in Papillion, Ne., Dale and Gwen decided to get married and were married on April 4, 1945. Gwen joined Dale on base in Biloxi, MS and in February of 1946, they left the military and returned to Paullina, Iowa. Dale and Gwen had five children and spent the next 40 years farming in O’Brien County, Iowa. In 1986, Dale and Gwen retired and moved to Las Cruces, NM and then to Las Vegas, NV where they resided until their deaths.
She was an active member of the Baker Methodist Church, singing in the choir, teaming up with Bernice Kaiser and Betty Porter to sing some of their favorite hymns on Sunday mornings. The church potlucks were a favorite time for the family with good food and good company and Gwen was in the thick of it with a smile and baked family favorites for everyone to enjoy. Gwen was an avid swimmer and taught all of her children to love and respect the water. She was an avid Birdwatcher; she was a charter member of the Prairie Lakes Audubon Society in Spirit Lake. She was also a member of Sweet Briar Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Paullina, Iowa.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her four children: Julie (Miley) Gonzalez and family of Las Cruces, NM; Curt Hedin of Sheldon; Ken Hedin and family of Lennox, SD and Greg (Tina) Hedin and family of Boise, Idaho. She was a proud grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. Also many friends will miss her smile and down-to-earth approach to life and living it to the fullest.
Gwen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dale; one son, her parents, and a brother, Claire.
