GUSTAV GUS A. PAULSEN
Gustav Gus A. Paulsen, the son of Ernest and Dena Christina (Meints) Paulsen was born on July 26, 1919 in Ashton, Iowa; he received his education in a country school near Melvin. In 1942, Gus joined the United States Army and served in the 245th Artillery during World War II. On January 30, 1943, he was united in marriage to Emma Stegemann of Matlock, Iowa while he was in the service in Ft. Hancock, New Jersey. After his discharge the couple made their home in Sheldon, Iowa. Gus had worked for several employers in and around the Sheldon area both before and after serving in the military. Those employers include a farmhand for Paul Rolston, in the welding shop of Lambert Levering, in the body shop of Duis Ford Motors, Glenn Rodger, dons Sheet Metal, Wayne Bilsland Case Dealership and Verschoor Motors before retiring in 1972. Emma preceded him in death on May 17, 2003 in Sheldon, Iowa. Later that year he moved to Spencer, Iowa where he met and was married to Theresa (Ginger) Engel in September of 2004. In 2013, Gus became a resident of the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, Iowa where he passed away on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 reaching the age of 95 years, 3 months and 9 days.
Gus was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon, the Twilighters, the Sheldon American Legion and Disabled Veterans. He enjoyed gardening, visiting with friends and family and he especially enjoyed listening to his Polka music.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Theresa Paulsen of Spencer, IA; his 2 sons, Henry and his wife, Gloria Paulsen of Sheldon and Elmer and his wife, Bev Paulsen of Madison, TN; 2 grandchildren, Tammy and (James) Behrens and Troy and (Natalie) Paulsen; 4 great-grandchildren, Brandon, Samantha and Jessica Behrens and Kaitlynn Paulsen; and 6 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Ernest Paulsen Jr. of Sheldon, IA and a sister, Margaret Schnider of Sgt. Bluffs, IA; also numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.
Gus is preceded in death by his first wife, Emma; an infant daughter, 2 granddaughters; his parents, 3 brothers and a sister.
