GRETTA UITTENBOGAARD
Gretta Uittenbogaard, the daughter of Berend and Wilhelmina (Groot) Granstra, was born February 11, 1919 on a farm north of Sanborn, Iowa. Gretta attended country school near Sanborn. On August 20, 1940, Gretta was united in marriage to Henry Levering in Doon, Iowa. After their marriage the couple made their home in Doon. To this union 2 children were born, Jay and Wanda. Gretta and Henry were among the first of the early home flippers, they would buy a home, fix it up, sell it and start over again. Gretta later worked with her husband at Temple Mortuary in Sheldon until his illness and death in the spring of 1950. She continued to manage and rent out apartments; she then worked at Culligan Soft Water for 15 years and then for Citizens State Bank in Sheldon as a teller and travel agent for 10 years. Gretta then married Martin Uittenbogaard on November 28, 1979 in Sheldon where they made their home. Martin preceded her in death on May 25, 1999. Gretta remained in her home in Sheldon, until moving into the Christian Retirement Home in 2005. Then in November of 2008, she moved to the Prairie View Home in Sanborn, where she passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 reaching the age of 92 years, 1 month and 26 days.
Gretta was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. She enjoyed reading, traveling and sewing and spending the winters in Arizona with her husband, Martin.
Gretta leaves to cherish her memory her six step-children, Glenda and her husband, Arwin Van Wyk of Sheldon; Mavis and her husband, Robert Poppema of Sheldon; Karen Vis of Valley Springs, Minnesota; Donna and her husband, Roger Poppema of Sheldon; Sharon and her husband, Steve Holz of Sheldon; and Marty and his wife, Dawn Uittenbogaard of Sheldon; twenty-one step grandchildren, fifty-one step great-grandchildren, step nine great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Levering and Marin Uittenbogaard; two children, Wanda Mae in infancy and Jay Harlan Levering in 1966; her parents, a step-son-in-law, Marlin Vis; a step grandson, Fredrick Brent Van Wyk; five brothers and one sister.
