GEORGE H. MURRAY
George Hauck “Bud” Murray, the son of George and Esther (Hauck) Murray was born June 6, 1923 in Sheldon, Iowa. Bud attended the Sheldon Public Schools, graduating in 1941. He attended Creighton University for one year before transferring to the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was drafted from college in 1943 to serve in World War II. He joined the Air Force and after training he was sent overseas to the Pacific Theater. He became a member of the Photo Reconnaissance Squadron, a division of the Air Force. It was there that he put his love and expertise of photography to use. After the war he went back to the University of Iowa to complete his B.A. degree, followed by attending the University of Iowa School Of Law, obtaining his law degree in 1950. Bud returned to Sheldon and joined his father, George Murray, Sr. as a partner of law, a position he held for over 50 years, many years after his father’s death. Bud passed away on Monday, March 21, 2011 at the Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa reaching the age of 87 years, 9 months and 15 days.
George was a lifetime member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon; an honorary life member of the Sheldon Knights of Columbus #1564; a 60 year member of the Sheldon Veterans of Foreign Wars Bunker-Peterson Post #7354 and of the American Legion Mc Glothlen-Cowie Post #145 of Sheldon. Beside photography, Bud had many outdoor interests. He was an avid hunter, an expert marksman and even made his own bullets. He loved to golf and was a lifetime member of the Sheldon Golf and Country Club. For many years, he did his own developing, enlarging and cropping of the negatives of the pictures he took. He often used his siblings as subjects and later on, his nieces and nephews.
George is survived by his sister, Mary Stark of Ft. Dodge, IA; three nephews, Steve Stark of Wichita, KS; Tom Stark of Ames, IA and David Stark of Des Moines, IA; three nieces, Michelle Kaufman of Kansas City, MO; Diane Stark of Kansas City, KS and Julie Manas of Davenport, IA; sixteen great nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Attorney Larry Postma and his wife, Lois were extremely close to Bud, like family and were wonderful help to him, especially as his health declined in his later years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jack Murray of Iowa City, IA and Jim Murray of St. Louis, MO.
