FRANK E. DAVIS
Frank Eugene Davis was born to Clarence Leland and Virginia Pearl (Fithen) Davis, November 4, 1928 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He was baptized in the Methodist Church. In 1946, he graduated from Essex, Iowa High School. After graduation he attended Tarkio College on a football scholarship until he received an injury which ended his football playing. He joined the Army and spent two years in Germany in personnel work. After his discharge he returned to Shenandoah where he was employed in sales at B.F. Goodrich Retail Store until August of 1953. He returned to college studies at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri. He received his BA degree in 1956 with majors in Business Education and Economics and his MA degree in 1960. While in Maryville he worked part time in retail sales for Montgomery Ward.
Frank married Muriel Jean Gatrelle on August 16, 1953 in Belle Plaine, Iowa and they made their home on the college campus. In 1956, they and their son, Michael moved to Primghar, Iowa where Frank began teaching business courses in the high school until his retirement in 1990. Through the years at P.H.S. his non-classroom duties included 33 years as yearbook advisor, sponsor of cheerleaders and pep club, summer recreation advisor-coach for six years and 15 years as boys golf coach. In 1973, Frank who as a youth learned the insulation business with his father, formed with his sons, Michael and Brian an energy savings insulation company until 1985. For several years he also had an American Family Agency.
Frank enjoyed taking part in Primghar organizations as he served on the City Council, became a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, a Hospital Dad with Abu Beker Shrine, served on the Primghar Golf Courses first board. He was a proud member of Chateau-Thierry Post # 36 of the American Legion. As a member of the United Church of Primghar he held several offices and especially enjoyed singing in the choir and mens chorus. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing, and golf (once a young golf caddy in Shenandoah he could never leave a lost ball lay). In retirement he enjoyed traveling to Europe, Asia, the Middle East and especially to spend time with children on the east coast. For several years a few winter months were spent at Gulf Shores, Alabama. He spent time in Spencer as a member of SCORE advising new businesses.
Frank is survived by his wife, Jean of Primghar; his sons and their wives, Michael and Katy of Baltimore, Maryland; Brian and Brenda of Austin, Texas; four grandsons, Spencer and Cameron of New York City, New York; Kenan and Graham of Austin, Texas; granddaughters, Emma and Margaret of Baltimore, Maryland; brothers, Robert Davis of Monroe, North Carolina and Roger and Patricia Davis of Hollow Rock, Tennessee and other relatives.
He is reunited with his parents, brother, Keith and many relatives and friends he loved.
