FLORA MAY CLAYTON
Flora May Clayton the daughter of Louis and Ella (Kruse) Warnke was born on her grandfathers farm southwest of Paullina, Iowa on September 24, 1922. She attended country school and graduated from Paullina High School in 1940. While in high school she excelled in music, playing the piano for the glee club and mixed chorus. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa for one year and began teaching in country school near Paullina for two years, Sutherland for four years and Peterson for four years. On October 3, 1949 she was united in marriage to George Weber Clayton in Sioux City, Iowa. After their marriage the couple settled in Paullina, where they raised their family. Education was very important to Flora May seeing her children and grandchildren attend college. In later years she returned to college and graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City with a BA degree in 1965, and a degree in Library Science in 1966. She taught one semester in Paullina. Weber preceded her in death on September 5, 2007 in Paullina. She remained in the family home until moving to Spirit Lake to be near her daughter Peggy. She passed away at the Lakes Regional Medical Center reaching the age of 93 years 9 months and 24 days.

She was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina being baptized on November 19, 1922 and later confirmed on May 22, 1938. She was taught by her mother to sew, crochet and embroider, play cards, and dancing which she all enjoyed to do. She and Weber enjoyed traveling visiting all 50 states and spending 20 winters in Pharr, Texas. She was a member of the Russell West Legion Auxiliary and served as the Union Township Trustee secretary for 35 years. She was a Hawkeye fan as her son and four grandchildren graduated from the University of Iowa.

Flora May is survived by one daughter, Peggy Rick of Spirit Lake, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Clayton of West Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren, Tricia (Isaiah) Fishman of Chicago, Illinois; John Clayton of Chicago, Illinois and Allison Clayton of West Palm Beach, Florida; two great grandchildren, Olivia and John Fishman; one sister, Lucy Jane Kamradt of Sutherland, Iowa also other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Georgia Clayton; one son, Kim Clayton; son-in-law, John Rick; granddaughter, Sara Rick; parents and one sister, Ann Lorraine Thoms.
