Eleanore Marie Roesler was born on January 25, 1913 on a farm near Manchester, Iowa, the daughter of John and Emma (Nieman) Yelden. Soon after her birth, her parents moved to Earlville, Iowa due to her father's declining health. He died when she was fourteen months old. Later her mother married John Wendt and the family included a step-sister, Louise and a step brother, Harold. Emma and John Wendt had two sons, Howard and Marvin. Eleanore was confirmed on May 30, 1926 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Earlville where she was active in Sunday School, Luther League and the music of the church. Years later when Eleanore returned to Earlville to teach, she became a Sunday School teacher and organist at Immanuel. She attended Earlville Public School and graduated in 1930 having participated in band, girl’s basketball and Girls Glee Club. Eleanore attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa for two years and then began teaching. She later received her B. A. degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Eleanore first taught in a rural school in Butler County, then in Curlew and Volga, all in Iowa. She then returned to Earlville where she taught for six years and was the coach for a winning girl’s basketball team. She taught for seven years in Manchester before taking a teaching position in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Eleanore was a very dedicated teacher who especially enjoyed teaching vocal music. Rialto Roesler and Eleanore were married on June 28, 1953 at First Lutheran Church in Manchester, Iowa. Rev. Roesler was ordained on July 12, 1953. Their first parishes were in North Dakota: Christ Lutheran in Mott and Trinity Lutheran in Carrington. From there they served in South Dakota at St. John Lutheran in Hosmer and then Colman-Midway Lutheran in Colman. Rev. Roesler was semi-retired when he and Eleanore served Siloam Lutheran in Paullina for ten years. After his retirement from Siloam, Rev. Roesler was an interim and supply pastor for area churches. Always a dedicated pastor's wife, Eleanore traveled with him to those services. Teaching continued to be important to Eleanore throughout her married life as she taught kindergarten in two communities, taught Sunday School, led women's Bible studies, and developed and presented many interesting programs. Her love of music served their parishes well as she directed choirs and was a substitute organist. Eleanore was especially proud of her cherub choirs, one of which had 60 members. Eleanore held offices in church women's groups on both local and district levels. Participating in community organizations was important to both Eleanore and Rialto. In Paullina she was active in Music Club, Book Club, Expression Group and Bible studies. The Roeslers enjoyed visits from family and friends, and Eleanore was always a gracious hostess. She enjoyed her hobbies of collecting bells and angels and reading. Following years of dealing with a severe hearing loss, Eleanore decided at age 90 to get a cochlear implant. She was one of the oldest patients to receive an implant at the University of Iowa. The Roeslers chose to retire in Paullina; but because of health concerns, moved from their home in Paullina to the Prairie View Campus in Sanborn in November of 2010.
Eleanore is survived by her husband, Rialto and a host of relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, step-sister, step-brother, and two half brothers.
