DONALD MAURICE CHAPPELL


Donald Maurice Chappell, the son of Guy and Clara (Newman) Chappell, was born June 2, 1918 in Sanborn, Iowa. He attended several different schools thru the 8th grade and junior high – including Rock Rapids / Marshall, Minnesota / Paullina and Hartley. He graduated from Sheldon High School in 1937. On June 15, 1941, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Mavis Armstrong in the United Methodist Church of Sheldon. Don was inducted into the Army on December 17, 1942, where from December 26, 1942 to October 9, 1943, he served with Company A, 758th Military Police Battalion. He was honorably discharged in October 1943. He returned to Sheldon after the Army, he and his wife settled and lived their married life in Sheldon. Don worked at Starrett’s as a clerk for several years – after the store was destroyed by fire he was employed by Security State Bank as a bank teller until his retirement in 1978. During his married lifetime he and his wife enjoyed 30 plus summers at their cottage in Spirit Lake, Iowa. In 2003 the Chappell’s moved to Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon. In January 2004, they moved into the Northwest Iowa Health Center – Senior Care in Sheldon. After the passing of his wife in September 2004, he returned to the Fieldcrest Assisted living, where he passed away on Friday, June 10, 2005, reaching the age of 87 years and 8 days.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sheldon and participated in the choir and Golden Angels Group. He was a charter member of the Prairie Queen Kiwanis Club and a 50 year member of the Sheldon American Legion Post #145. He enjoyed playing cards, ballroom dancing and square dancing and being with people.
Don leaves to cherish his memory his relatives, friends and a “special extended family.”
He was preceded in death by his wife (Dorothy); his parents; a brother, (Clayton); and two sisters-in-law.
