Darlene Kay Broocks, the daughter of Leo and Rosa (Westphal) Broocks was born on February 3, 1945, in rural O’Brien County, Iowa. On February 18, 1945, she was baptized and on March 22, 1964, confirmed all at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown where she was a life-long member. After her parents passed away, she moved to be closer to family, as she moved to Independence, Iowa in Wildberry Senior Apartments. After her cousin Roger Silberstein passed away, she moved to Walden Place Independent Living Center in Iowa City and recently was living in her “compartment” at the Solon Retirement Assisted Living where she was loved and cared for by all. Even though she was away from the farm she always thought about the farm and growing up in “Northwest Ioway.” She often if not on most occasion spoke of her spirit “flying back there with Jesus” to rest with her family. Darlene passed away under hospice care at Mercy Iowa City after a short illness, reaching the age of 76 years, 6 months, and 27 days.
Some of her passions included watching IPTV and TBN for sewing/cooking and religious services, she enjoyed dining out with family, but hated mosquitoes with a passion (always wore a sweater just in case no matter how blazing hot it was outside). She pieced together many jigsaw puzzles and collected “a few” Barbie Dolls, she liked to visit the casinos occasionally, played bingo and was usually lucky at both. In her earlier years, along side her mother, she became an avid quilter and was talented at painting by number (has the books and pattern to prove it). She often spoke of traveling the country with her parents to see the sights and attended conventions, auctions, and shows. She enjoyed listening to Sunday Morning Polka Party and old Country music on AM radio. She also enjoyed all things pug dog, many photos, memories growing up of a special pug and of course collected pug statues, calendars, clothing and more.
Left to cherish her memory are cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Dale in 1971 and her cousin, caregiver and legal guardian, Roger Silberstein.
