CLINTON JOHN BLISS
Clinton John Bliss, the son of George and Leona (Shaffer) Bliss, was born June 21, 1918 in Redwood County, MN, where he spent his childhood and received his education. In 1938, Clinton moved to Sheldon, IA where he worked with his uncle, Si Shaffer, at Carl Johnson’s Garage and Implement. On October 1, 1941, he joined the United States Army, serving in the 27th Division of the 106th Infantry during World War II. He was in the Pacific Campaign, in Hawaii, Enewetok, Iwo Jima, Saipan and Okinawa and was Honorably Discharged from the service on October 5, 1945. Clinton was united in marriage to Darleen Frohwein on October 20, 1945 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA and to this union; they were blessed with a daughter, LaNan. The young couple made their home in Sheldon, where they farmed for 1 ½ years. In 1947, they bought a farm near Slayton, MN, where they farmed for 33 years; Clinton had also driven a school bus. He attended G.I. classes for 3 years in Slayton. In 1980, they retired and moved to Primghar, IA, where he assisted his son-in-law at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Homes in Paullina and Primghar and later after they moved to Sheldon in 1993 at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon. Clinton passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2007, at the Northwest Iowa Health Center-Senior Care in Sheldon, IA, reaching the age of 88 years, 9 months and 18 days.
He was a member of Sheldon’s United Methodist Church, the Prairie Queen Kiwanis and the Sheldon American Legion, Post #145. He enjoyed camping, bus tours, and camping caravans. He had traveled throughout all of the United States, except for Maine and had flown to Hawaii and Alaska. They had spent many winters in Safford and Mesa, AZ. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren playing games and taking them camping at Cutty’s. His hobbies were wood working, gardening, playing many card games and pool in the parks in Arizona and at home.
Clinton leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 61 years, Darleen; and a daughter, LaNan and her husband, Peter Eldridge of Paullina, IA; four grandchildren, Andy and his wife, Melissa Eldridge of Elk City, OK; Allison and her husband, John Meyer of Moore, OK; Ben Eldridge of Ames, IA and Jill Eldridge of Paullina, IA; two sisters, Mary Lou Burtzel and Bernice and her husband, Rolland Shemon all of Redwood Falls, MN; two brothers, Ervin Bliss of Seaforth, MN and Gary and his wife, Lorna Bliss of Redwood Falls, MN; and other relatives and friends.

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall
not want. He maketh me to lie
down in green pastures; He leadeth
me beside still waters. He
restoreth my soul; He leadeth me
in the paths of righteousness for
His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of death, I will
fear no evil; for Thou art with me;
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort
me; Thou preparest a table before
me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou anointest my head with oil,
my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall
follow me all the days of my life;
and I will dwell in the house of the
Lord forever.
