Clarence J. Stallmann, the son of John Stephen and Anna Mary (Kanngiesser) Stallmann, was born September 19, 1915 in rural Granville, Iowa. The family moved to a farm in Baker Township in O’Brien County in 1917. He graduated from St. Anthony’s Catholic Grade School in Hospers. After his education he helped his father on the family farm. Clarence started farming in Baker Township in the spring of 1937 and on June 7, 1937, he was united in marriage to Catherine A. Schwebach, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville. Clarence farmed this land until his retirement in 1982, when he and his wife moved into Sheldon. His wife, Catherine preceded him in death on December 4, 1989 in Sheldon, Iowa. Clarence remained in their home until June of 2004, when he became a resident of the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon. He passed away at the care center on Thursday, February 17, 2005, reaching the age of 89 years, 4 months and 29 days.
He was an active member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hospers and of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Sheldon. Clarence was an avid collector of vintage farm tools and of St. Louis Cardinals Memorabilia. He served on the ASCS Board for 25 years and also served on the Hospers Elevator Board and the Big 4 Soybean Association.
Clarence leaves to cherish his memories, his 15 children, Germaine and her husband, Sylvester Schmit of Hospers, IA; Joan and her husband, Norbert Klein of Sanborn, IA; John Stallmann of Pigeon, MI; Marlene and her husband, Tony Pape of Sheldon, IA; Joyce and her husband, Dennis Holles of Dell Rapids, SD; Mary Jane Stallmann and her husband, Gordon Schofer of Grimes, IA; Dianne Stallman of Arlington, VA; David and his wife, Connie Stallmann of Sebastopol, CA; Judy Stallmann of Columbia, MO; Alice and her husband, Marvin Crayton of Brighton, CO; Karen and her husband, John Dagel of Sibley, IA; Steve and his wife, Debbie Stallmann of Hospers, IA; Tom Stallmann of Ft. Collins, CO; Brenda Stallmann and her husband Tom Bremer of Clarkson Valley, MO; Nick and his wife, Dianna Stallmann of Hospers, IA; 43 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Margaret Stallmann of Hartley, IA; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; 2 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Vincent and John; and 4 sisters, Gertrude Hockstatter; Frances McCarty; Coletta Schwebach and Alvina Krantz.
