CHRIS A. VAN BEEK


Chris Arthur Van Beek, the son of John and Anna (Peters) Van Beek was born April 6, 1920 in Sheldon, Iowa. He received his education in country school after which he assisted his father on the family farm. On August 15, 1941, he was united in marriage to Verna A. Teeselink in Macy, Nebraska. After their marriage Chris entered the Army on July 22, 1942, serving in the South Pacific in the Anti Aircraft Division as a radar operator. He was discharged on December 12, 1945, after which he began farming near Sheldon. The couple also farmed near Archer, Struble and in 1957 moved to a farm between Paullina and Primghar, where they farmed until their retirement in 1984. The couple built a new home in Primghar and moved to town. Verna preceded him in death on April 8, 2003 in Primghar. Chris remained in the family home before moving to the Primghar Care Center in September of 2006. He passed away at the care center on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, reaching the age of 89 years, 8 months and 23 days.
He was a member of the American Reformed Church in Primghar. He enjoyed farming, working with his hands and especially spending time with his family.
Chris is survived by seven children and their spouses, David and Carol Van Beek of Sheldon; James and Lynn Van Beek of Ashland, MA; Robert and Janet Van Beek of Primghar; Richard and Angie Van Beek of Paullina; Jon and Sharon Van Beek of Primghar; Jane and Shawn Zupp of Washta and Daniel and Janice Van Beek of Paullina; 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, one brother, Lester Van Beek of Sheldon and a sister-in-law, Irene Van Beek of Sheldon; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a grandson, Mike Van Beek; his parents, two brothers, Henry Van Beek and Harold Van Beek and a sister, Jeanette Frissel.
