BETTY L. BROTHERTON

Betty Lou Brotherton, the daughter of Charles and Lena (Stroman) Bruns was born December 24, 1931 in Caledonia Township, O’Brien County, Iowa. She received her education in country school. On June 25, 1950, she was united in marriage to Vernell Hoermann at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown. After their marriage the couple settled on a farm near Gaza. Her husband preceded her in death on May 27, 1977. Betty then moved into Paullina to make her home. Throughout the years Betty was employed as an aide at the Primghar Care Center, a cook at the Paullina School and at Casey’s General Store in Paullina. On August 7, 1982, she was united in marriage to Darrell Brotherton in Hurley, South Dakota. The couple lived in the Hurley area before moving back to Paullina. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1994 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After his passing Betty has remained in her home in Paullina. She passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the Orange City Area Health System in Orange City, Iowa reaching the age of 80 years, 7 months and 15 days.
She was baptized and later confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown and she was currently a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren, playing cards, gardening with her flowers, dancing and crocheting.
Betty is survived by her children, Mervyn Hoermann of Paullina; Carol Keating of Leawood, Kansas and LaVonne and her husband, Terry Peters of Everly, Iowa; six grandchildren, Clint, Alexis, Chris, Amber, Mandi and Clayton; two step grandchildren, Chad and Michael, 4 great grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren, three brothers, Charles and his wife, Evelyn Bruns of Primghar; Richard Bruns of Paullina and Dennis and his wife, Janet Bruns of Alton; a brother-in-law, Burnell Koehlmoos of Omaha, Nebraska and a sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Bruns of Sutherland; also other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, son-in-law, Larry Keating; her parents, two brothers, Leo Bruns and Ralph and his wife, Betty Bruns and a sister, Clara Koehlmoos.
