Beth E. Hulstein, age 70, of rural Melvin, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at the Sanford Health Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Family services will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon, Iowa with Rev. Paul Van Maaren ~ officiating.

Burial will be in the Baker Township Cemetery at Melvin, Iowa.

There will be No Visitation.

Beth Elaine Hulstein of Melvin, Iowa, age 70 years, went home to be with Jesus on January 6, 2021 after a courageous battle with post Covid complications.
Beth was born on December 4, 1950 to Floyd and Agnes (Johnson) Sudenga. She grew up in George, Iowa and attended the George Community School where she excelled in her studies, played clarinet in the band and enjoyed playing basketball. Following her high school graduation in 1969, she attended Nettleton College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she graduated with a degree in accounting. She not only began working in the office at the family business in George, but she also took a job at Bob Wolfe and Associates in Sheldon, Iowa. After a few months of working in Sheldon she met a nice young man by the name of Rod Hulstein, who would eventually ask her on a date. After dating for seven months, Rod asked her to be his wife. On December 18, 1972 Rod and Beth were united in marriage at the Evangelical United Methodist Church in George, Iowa.
Making their home on a farm by Melvin, Rod and Beth were blessed with three children, Scott, Valerie, and Mark. Beth was a devoted farm wife and mother. There was nothing she would not do for her family. As a young family Rod and Beth would enjoy taking family trips. This began Beth’s love of travel. As their children grew, moved out and got married, Rod and Beth began to make memories by traveling together all over the United States including Hawaii and Alaska.
The only thing that Beth enjoyed more than traveling with Rod was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Whether it was a band, choir or piano concert or a sporting event she was always supportive of their talents. She enjoyed spending time with them, just listening to their stories. She was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren and she made sure they knew that.
In addition to being a dedicated and loving mom and grandma, Beth held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her. Devotions were something she and Rod shared throughout their lives. She would often let her children and grandchildren know she was praying for them. Having that strong faith foundation was an ever-present comfort to her, especially in her last days. She will always be remembered for her unwavering faith and her desire to see her family walk with the Lord.
Beth leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 48 years, Rod Hulstein, her children, Scott (Jamie) Hulstein of Melvin, Valerie (Andy) Hennig of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, and Mark (Rosie) Hulstein of Sibley, her grandchildren, Ashilyn, Karissa and Alexis Hulstein, Martin, Graham, and Sylvia Hennig, and Dawson and Walker Stubbe, her sister, Sharon (Keith) Culver of Stewartville, Minnesota, her brother-in-law, Loren (Deb) Hulstein of Sheldon and her sister-in-law, Sharon Nichols of Dayton, Oregon. Along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Greeting her at heaven’s gates are her parents, Floyd and Agnes Sudenga, her parents-in-law, Fred and Grace Hulstein her sister and brother-in-law, Kay (Bill) Nieuwendorp, and her brother-in-law, Myron Nichols.
