ARTHUR VAN MEETEREN


Arthur Van Meeteren was born August 1, 1920, at the Crams Hospital in Sheldon, Iowa to Arthur K. and Matilda (Donkersloot) Van Meeteren. Art attended country school near Sheldon. He served his country in the United States Army in the 91st Infantry Division in the Italian Campaign during World War II. On January 20, 1944, he was united in marriage to his friend and the love of his life, Adaline E. Perrott at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon. After his discharge from the service, the young couple made their home on the family farm east of Sheldon and raised their five children: Tom, Bob, Lynn, Vonda and Renee. Upon retiring from farming in 1981, they spent 8 summers at their lake home in Okoboji. In 1994, they built a new home and moved into Sheldon. Art was preceded in death by his wife, Adaline on August 23, 2006 in Sheldon, Iowa. Art remained in the family home until his death on Thursday, May 31, 2007 at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon, reaching the age of 86 years, 9 months and 30 days.
Art was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Sheldon; a 61 year member of the Sheldon Knights of Columbus Council #1564 and a 60 year member of the Sheldon American Legion Post# 145. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards, especially poker.
Those left to cherish Art’s memory are his five children and their spouses, Tom and Sue Van Meeteren of Valley, NE; Bob and Cheryl Van Meeteren of Sheldon, IA; Lynn and Elvina Van Meeteren of George, IA; Vonda and Larry Matchie of Roland, IA; Renee and Jim Sims of El Paso, TX; 11 grandchildren, Robbie and her husband, Steve Aamot; Christie and her husband, Shane Jager; Mike and his wife, Tami Van Meeteren; Heath Van Meeteren; John Van Meeteren; Melissa Van Meeteren; Bob Van Meeteren; Sara Matchie; Chad Matchie; James Sims; Christopher Sims; 5 great-grandchildren, Josh, Hunter and Megan Jager; Madison and Mallorie Van Meeteren; a sister-in-law, Lavonne Perrott of Sheldon, IA; numerous nephews and nieces; his special friends, Dr. Matt and Jody Radke and their children; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Adaline on August 23, 2006; his parents; two brothers, Clarence and Ralph Van Meeteren; one sister, Gladys Van Meeteren, and brother-in-law Vince Perrott.
