Arlene May Tjossem, the daughter of Martin and Mabel (Wrede) Dornbusch was born May 15, 1924 in Paullina, Iowa. She attended and graduated from Paullina High School in 1942. She also graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa in 1946 majoring in music. She taught music in schools in Linn Grove, Archer and later Paullina. In 1952, she was united in marriage to George Tjossem. After their marriage the couple moved to Middlesex County, Virginia. She taught music and elementary grade school in public school in Virginia. Arlene also was a church organist and gave many piano lessons. She returned to Paullina in 1980 to make her home. While in Paullina she was employed at the Paullina Times Newspaper. She moved to the Paullina Care Center in 2007 and later to the Prairie View Retirement Home in Sanborn. She passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at the Baum-Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar, reaching the age of 86 years, 2 month and 18 days.
She was baptized in June of 1924 and later confirmed on May 22, 1938 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina, where she was currently a member. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, playing cards, traveling and doing puzzles.
Arlene is survived by one son, Martin Tjossem of Paullina and one daughter, Linda and her husband, Deke Abbott of Hayes, Virginia; a granddaughter, who shares Arlene’s love of music, Rachel Abbott of Hayes, Virginia and one sister, Beverly Ottum of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; also other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
