AGNES KOERSELMAN HINKEN
Agnes Koerselman Hinken, the daughter of John and Hattie (De Boer) Meerbeek, was born August 8, 1934 on the family farm near Rock Valley, IA. She lived her childhood with one sister and two brothers on a farm near Rock Valley where she received her education in a country school through the 8th grade. As a young woman she lived with families to help with their children and that’s how she found the love of her life, Herman. She was united in marriage to Herman W. Koerselman on June 29, 1954 at the First Reformed Church in Matlock, IA. After their marriage the couple lived in the country near Matlock where Herm worked for area farmers. They then moved into Sheldon where Herm worked for Neal Chase until he passed away February 14, 1985. They raised five children, plus they always had room for one more child if they needed a home or a place to stay. Agnes always had an open heart. Agnes had worked at Urban’s Café, the Sheldon Motel and the Crown Fork. In addition Herm and Agnes enjoyed managing the Far Apartment for many of the NITC Students. On October 24, 1987, she was united in marriage to Larry L. Hinken in Sheldon, IA; he preceded her in death on January 30, 2013. Agnes had lived in the Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon for two years prior to her moving into the Good Samaritan Home in George, IA for the past two years. Agnes passed away at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon, on January 15, 2014, reaching the age of 79 years, 5 months and 7 days.
She attended Parkview Assembly of God Church in Sheldon in her last years. While a member at the First Reformed Church in Matlock, she taught Sunday School, with great joy to teach the word of God to the children. She loved working with people of all kinds. She always had the biggest vegetable and flower garden in the neighborhood which was her passion and she shared the produce and the flowers with her neighbors and her children. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, doing projects for her children and grandchildren. But most of all she enjoyed her family and loved each one dearly.
Agnes is survived by her 5 children, Arlene Walgenbach of Hospers, IA; Harvey and (Sharon) Koerselman of Sheldon, IA; Jolene and (Dave) Kamies of Sheldon, IA; Gary Koerselman of Sheldon, IA; Donna and (Duane) Delp of Jefferson, IA; 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, a sister, Carolyn Van Voorst and two brothers, Allen and John Meerbeek all of Rock Valley, IA; three sisters-in-law, Rose Koerselman Lode of Sheldon, IA; Josephine Lang of Rock Valley and Anna Mae Koerselman of Merrill, IA  and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husband’s and a son-in-law, Craig Steven Walgenbach.
